Spoken Language Study
Accent:
How you pronounce something depending on where you’re from.
Dialect:
Words that are used in different parts of the country. For example George W Bush pronounces ‘you all’ as “y’all”.
Adjacency Pairs: Normally
are sentence starters, which take turns in polite replies.
Back-Channel Replies: Interruptions when someone is talking, they occur just to
show the person who is talking that you are interested, such words that are
used are ‘mmm, yeah. I know what you’re
talking about’ a sign of politeness.
Diexis: This
is when you mention something without using ‘proper’ words, examples of this is
when you say (it, him, her etc…)
Elision:
Is when your accent changes a word without you realising. ‘Want to becomes: wanna’ and ‘you all becomes: y’all’.
Ellipsis: Is
when people miss out words to make things sound shorter, ‘I might be/Might Be’. This
makes sentences sound more casual.
